The Geelong Flyers Junior Development Program were established to provide a dedicated development pathway for aspiring netballers in the Geelong region.

Built on a commitment to excellence, teamwork, and growth, the program has become a key stepping stone for athletes aiming to compete at higher levels, including the Victorian Netball League.

The new social media ban (which comes into effect tomorrow) means athletes under 16 may not have personal accounts on social media.

𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗗𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻

We would like to advise our members, families, and supporters that the Flyers Junior Development Program has officially withdrawn from the Geelong Netball Club and will now operate as its own independent entity.

This has not been an easy decision. A considerable amount of time, discussion, and careful consideration has been invested to ensure that we continue to deliver the same high-quality program that our athletes, families, and community have come to expect.

This decision follows a divergence in the direction and priorities of the two programs, particularly in the delivery in development pathway. To remain true to our vision and continue providing the strongest possible program for our athletes, the Flyers Junior Development Program will now move forward independently.

Flyers will continue to deliver the holistic netball program that our club has become synonymous with over the last 10 years. The Flyers Junior Development Program remains committed to providing a holistic pathway that works collaboratively with grassroots netball as well as with higher-level pathways. Our focus continues to be fostering the growth of strong, resilient young people for the betterment of netball and its future in our community.

We also want to reassure our community that our commitment to developing junior netballers across Geelong and the Western District remains as strong as ever.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to this new chapter and the continued growth of the Flyers Junior Development Program.

Sophie Taylor wants you to join Flyers! Don’t disappoint!

Trialling for the first time in 2022 at 12 years old, I became one of the youngest selected into the program. My first year was extra special, as I got to share it with my older sister Ruby, who I used to watch on the sidelines at Parkville before joining myself. I started playing netball when I was five, and being taller for my age, I was put into GK, a position that has stuck with me ever since. Flyers has shaped not only the player I am today but also the person I’ve become. It has taught me resilience, how to play with confidence and sportsmanship, and has watched me grow from a little training partner all those years ago to finishing my final season playing 19/U in the Altona Competition. If you’re considering trialling, I would 100% encourage you to give it a go.

Yes, Flyers is a big commitment, giving up most Sunday afternoons, but the effort you put in is always reflected in what you gain, whether it’s lifelong friendships, athlete development, or becoming part of the Flyers family. I will always be grateful for the opportunities, friendships, and coaching connections I’ve made by being part of Flyers 🩷💙

Losing her voice isn’t going to stop Lucia Bugeja from sharing her experience in the Flyers Program!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Flyers as a player. I trialled initially as a GA/C - my first time trialling I was unsuccessful, however that motivated me to trial the following year.

I worked extra hard on my skills and fitness and I was determined to make the program, and was successful in my second year trialling.

I transitioned from a GA to a midcourter mainly playing C/WA. I loved these positions, learned a bunch and gained so much confidence in myself due to the amazing support of my coaches.

Throughout my time at Flyers I have connected with all of my coaches and teammate. They have shown amazing support to me over the years and with their encouragement and guidance I even branched out to playing WD. At first I felt like a headless chicken, and personally I love to ask loads of questions, and my coaches always have a helpful answer. They helped me grow and love the role of WD, whilst continuing developing my skills in C and WA.

The program not only is about netball. It includes sessions of well-being, which to me is very crucial as I have struggled with mental health and my coaches have been incredible in helping me through it and supporting me. We participated in yoga sessions which were so much fun and made my body feel very rejuvenated afterwards as well as sessions at GAC (Geelong Athlete Centre) which I loved as they were so much fun and made me feel a good burn the next day!

Overall I have loved my time at Flyers. I strongly encourage anyone interested to trial as it has truly changed my game, my knowledge and my overall perspective of netball, and I have made many friendships and grown as a person!

The Emma McVilly Most Promising Player Award is given to a player showing the same qualities as Emma did during her time with the Geelong Flyers Program. These include;
- outstanding netball skills
- high work ethic
- exemplary attitude
- ability to be coached, and
- respectful of teammates, coaches and officials.

This year, our coaching team have voted Isla Webber as the recipient of the Emma McVilly Most Promising Player Award.

Isla is the youngest ever recipient of the Emma McVilly Most Promising Player Award.

Congratulations Isla, we are extremely excited to see what you do next!

MAYA RHODES | EMMA MCVILLY MOST PROMISING PLAYER

The Emma McVilly Most Promising Player Award is given to a player showing the same qualities as Emma did during her time with the Geelong Flyers Program. These include;
- outstanding netball skills
- high work ethic
- exemplary attitude
- ability to be coached, and
- respectful of teammates, coaches and officials.

This year, our coaching team have voted Maya Rhodes as the recipient of the Emma McVilly Most Promising Player Award. Maya was unable to attend our Presentation Event due to club commitments, highlighting her exemplary attitude and her high work ethic towards her netball career.

Congratulations Maya, we cannot wait to see what your future holds!

ERIN MCGINNESS | JAN OMAN AWARD OF MERIT

The Jan Oman Award of Merit is given to a player in recognition to the contribution they make to the Geelong Flyers Program. This player displays the following qualities;
- leadership, empathy and supportive of teammates
- initiative and commitment at training
- exemplary behaviour
- steps up at difficult times
- strong communication skills, and
- an overall good role model.

Erin is supportive of everyone in the Geelong Flyers Program, shows determination, drive and resilience, is always willing to help at training and on game days, and provides strong leadership to the group.

This year, our coaching team have awarded Erin McGinness as the recipient of the Jan Oman Award of Merit. Congratulations Erin!

Hear from first year Flyers coach, Lucy Sampson, about her development as a coach, and the transition from Flyers athlete to Flyers coach.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵?
I have always enjoyed coaching and it is something I’m quite passionate about but I never knew what opportunities there were. After injuring my knee and not being able to play I still wanted to be involved in netball and the Flyers program so when I was asked if I wanted to develop my coaching within the Flyers program, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity.

𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵.
I started by coming to trials and I knew immediately that this is something I wanted to do. Once teams were selected I was mentored by the Team 3 coach, Paula, on game days, and all the coaches during training. I was able to observe the way they coached, ask questions and implement my own ideas at the games. It was a great way for me to start developing my skills and confidence as a coach before Elly and I took on the role as Team 3 coaches, ultimately winning a premiership which was very exciting and such great experience!

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲?
I think being a Flyers athlete before a coach helped with a smooth transition as I was familiar with most of the drills, area specifics and, in general, how Flyers training sessions and games ran. This gave me confidence coming into the coaching space but also allowed me to be aware of areas I would like to develop and improve as a coach.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲?
I plan to continue coaching at Flyers next year and am excited to keep learning and applying all the skills I’ve learnt from this year!

The Rising Star Award celebrates standout players under the age of 21 who show exceptional promise and performance on the court.

New Zealand is special to Teyana; she’s learning the culture and representing the country where her dad was born and raised.

Following on from an incredible 2024 campaign where Teyana was named captain of the 13/U squad (pictured), we’re excited to follow Teyana’s Pacific Cup journey.
